Versican is a protein encoded by the VCAN gene which is approximately 372,8 kDa. Versican is secreted into the extracellular space. It is involved in the integrin pathway, ERK signalling, glycosaminoglycan metabolism and phospholipase-C pathway. This protein falls under the aggrecan/versican proteoglycan family. It is a large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan and is a major component of the extracellular matrix. This protein is involved in cell adhesion, proliferation, migration and angiogenesis and plays a central role in tissue morphogenesis and maintenance. Versican is expressed in the cerebral white matter and plasma. Mutations in the VCAN gene may result in wagner vitreoretinopathy. STJ96239 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of versican protein.
